“Heroínas en la Sombra” portraits the reality of animal welfare societies (AWS) in Spain.
Far from being a publicly funded service, this AWS are really neighbourhoods associations. This is something the most of the population in Spain unknowns.
It means the members are who finance its own activity, who dedicate a part of their free time working for the society and who establish protocols and methods of action according to their experience, possibilities and/or circumstances.
Nowadays, this neighbours’ work is the only guarantee of effective protection for homeless animals in our country.
Taking as example the work of four AWS from Madrid, these photos show the real living conditions of these animals as well as the difficult conditions in which volunteers perform a public service in a totally altruistic way.
